This first conference sought to evaluate and rethink teaching practices and research within the field of communication, as acknowledged in academics worried about this time of globalization and technological challenges that were carrying to rethink the practices of communicative and professional work.
It was a place to share experiences in professional communication, a meeting place to discuss, debate and enrich perspectives, ideas, project, achievements and strategies of teaching and learning.

Dedicated to bringing communication scholars together across political and cultural boundaries, this preconference serves as a follow-up to the First Communication Conference of the Americas in 1997, in Mexico City. Both in 1997 and today, these conferences share the purpose of promoting dialogue among communication scholars throughout the countries of the Americas and providing an opportunity for them to share their perspectives, research, and teaching strategies.

The primary rationale for this preconference is to provide Communication scholars from South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and North America an opportunity to share their collaborative research and pedagogical programs in a major international forum.
The three primary expected outcomes of this preconference are: (1) Presentations by representatives of three to five cross-cultural collaborative projects in the Americas; (2) A poster session providing a wide representation of cross-cultural collaborative projects taking place through out the Americas; and, (3) A business meeting of scholars wishing to form a steering committee responsible for promoting the development of a caucus or division within the National Communication Association dedicated to a continuation of a North-South Communication dialogue on an annual basis
